Why Choose a String of Hearts?
- Air-Purifying: The string of hearts plant is a natural air purifier. Its foliage helps filter out airborne toxins and pollutants commonly found in household products and works quietly to improve the indoor air quality.
- Pet-Friendly: This plant is non-toxic to pets so perfect for homes with cats or dogs.
- Low Maintenance: Not only is it a visually appealing houseplant, but it’s also easy to care for, making it ideal for first time plant parents.
Our Care Guide:
Light Conditions
The string of hearts thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, which enhances its vibrant leaf patterns, but avoid harsh afternoon sun as it can scorch the leaves. If natural light is limited, this plant also does well under grow lights. Try positioning it on a shelf or in a hanging pot as the leaves will trail over the edges.
Watering
As a semi-succulent, the string of hearts is drought-tolerant and prefers a “soak and dry” watering method. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. During its growing season (spring and summer), water approximately once every 1-2 weeks, and reduce watering in the cooler months.
TOP TIP: Press your finger an inch into compost, if your finger has compost particles on and the compost feels wet your plant does not require water.

Potting
Use a well-draining potting mix, such as Westland Cacti & Succulent Potting Mix to prevent water retention. This mix has just the right level of nutrients a string of hearts needs to thrive. It is enriched with sand, creating a high free-draining gritty mix for dry, healthy roots. The added zinc complex promotes more root growth and faster re-potting establishment and boosts plant resilience. The Seramis® granules absorb all the water and nutrients and then release them when needed to ensure the plant is kept hydrated and nourished.
Ensure the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape. Repotting is only necessary every 2-3 years or if the plant becomes root-bound. Find out more on how to repot.
Feeding
Feed your string of hearts with our Cacti & Succulent Feed so you can ensure you are giving them all the nutrients they need to thrive. Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid feeding in autumn and winter when the plant is dormant.
Common issues to look out for
- Large spaces between the leaves: If you notice wide gaps between the leaves, it could mean your string of hearts isn’t receiving enough light. Consider moving it to a brighter location.
- Yellow leaves: The most common culprit is overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again
- Wilted and dropping leaves: This could indicate that the plant needs more water. Use a watering indicator or do the finger test to determine if it needs water.
- Pests: If you spot any pests such as Mealybugs, spider mites, or aphids then wipe the leaves with a damp cloth and repeat daily until the pests have gone.
