We've got a small pond and I'd like to plant a water lily, how do I do this without the soil floating away?

First of all you need to buy a special water-garden planting basket. This is like a net plant pot that has holes all over the surface. You should find them widely available at most water gardening departments in garden centres.
You line the basket with hessian and actually plant the water lily into the basket using Aquatic Compost. This specialist compost contains sterilised loam to ensure that it is safe to use in a pond and it also includes a unique slow release nutrient source that stops excess plant food from leaching into the water and encouraging algae to grow.
When you have planted the lily into the basket, mulch over the top of the compost with Pea Gravel to weigh the basket down and to also stop the compost from washing into the pond. Place the basket under water, on a planting shelf within your pond so that the leaves are just on the water surface. If the leaves are too short then make a raised platform from bricks and place the basket on this. Over the next few weeks gradually lower the basket until it as at the required depth and the leaves still float on the surface.
