Cottage Garden Collections07 Feb 2008

Flowerbeds and borders, whether sheltered from the sun, or often struck by its rays, can be amazingly transformed next summer, to show off an assortment of dazzling colours and contrasting blooms. The Cottage Garden Collections from Unwins have been especially created to produce blooming beds and borders regardless of the amount of sunlight the garden may receive.

The varieties are divided into two simple categories, ‘Borders in the Sun’ and ‘Borders in the Shade’, therefore every gardener can pick a bare root variety that suits their location.

For an instant impact in a sunny location, the Agapanthus ‘Headbourne Hybrids’ has deep violet trumpet shaped flowers to catch the eye and be a talking point with the neighbours. To create a stunning backdrop, try the large flowering, rich blue Delphinium ‘Volkerfrieden’, accompanied by the Hemerocallis, ‘Chicago Royal Robe’ that provides colour all summer with its stunning burgundy and yellow petals. When the sun is high, enjoy the fragrances released from the centre of the rich pink  Echinacea purpurea ‘Vintage Wine’ or the Phlox ‘Peppermint Twist’ with its distinctive pink and white soft petals.

For flowers that stand out in the shade, the white and light green Astilbe ‘Rock & Roll’ comes back stronger each year after thriving particularly in overcast beds. To create a display that focuses especially on an artistic nature, the Hosta ‘Sieboldiana’ has large heart shaped leaves accompanied by unique white flowers, to add a new dimension to the flowerbed. Don’t worry if you think you are seeing double, the Geranium Pratense ‘Summer Skies’ is a rather tall variety that shows off beautiful double violet blue large flowers.

The colours and varieties available in these collections all harmonise so everyone can create a complete border with confidence. These first class quality varieties are available in packages that provide simple-step-by-step instructions, enabling all gardeners to have flourishing beds and borders every summer. All varieties retail at £4.99.
