Exotic visitors29 Aug 2007

Look out this summer for the magnificent Hummingbird Hawk moth. It is a migrant moth that cannot usually survive the British winter, but one, when seen that is so delightful it conjures the feel of a real Mediterranean garden. Many British gardeners have reported these visitors in their gardens over the last three summers, flitting between lavender and verbena bushes around the patio and greenhouse, looking and acting in a similar way to tiny exotic humming birds.

Last year sightings of this little beauty generated an above average number of gardening enquiries. Keep your eyes open in warm sunny weather. It is one of the most breathtaking sights of summer wildlife and one not to be missed.
