Growing Tomatoes in Instant Planters*

For the tastiest tomatoes grow your own. Choosing seed gives you greater control over what you grow, as there are dozens of varieties to choose from.
As a general rule greenhouse tomatoes can be sown from January as they will not be planted outside and be at risk of frost damage. Outdoor tomatoes should be sown in May. But if you haven’t sown them, it’s not too late to grow tomatoes, simply buy ready grown plants from the garden centre and follow the steps from step 3.

 

 

 

Step 1

Sow tomato seeds individually into pots or modules of fresh Westland John Innes Seed Sowing Compost with Sure Start. Water gently and keep frost free to germinate.

 

Step 2

When the seedlings germinate keep them in a light airy place to grow on. Continue to water them to keep the compost moist.

 

 

Step 3

When the plants are large enough to handle and the roots are showing through the base of the pots or modules they are ready to plant up into Instant Planters or large pots of compost.

 

 

Step 4

Plant three established tomato plants into an Instant Planter. Make a planting hole and carefully place the root ball into the compost and firm in gently. Keep well watered. Place outside in a sunny position when all danger of frost has passed. Stake the plants and tie in the main stem as they develop. Keep well watered and feed regularly with Westland Nutri Tomato Feed. Remove the main shoot when the plant has five trusses of fruit developing.
