Summer Mushroom Kit

Step 1

Open the box carefully. Pour the mushroom compost in the clear bag into the polystyrene box and spread it out evenly. Fold the sides of the cardboard lid under and place the box lid over the top to create an air gap and a dark environment. Place in a warm place (20-25C) and keep moist.

Step 2

After 9-10 days add 0.5litres of water to the white bag of casing peat and mix well. Pour this over the mushroom compost. Replace the lid and move the whole box to a cooler place (16-20C) for the mushrooms to develop. Check every 2 days and keep moist.

Step 3

After another week you should start to see tiny white pinheads forming, these are immature mushrooms. Water carefully, keeping the compost moist at all times and take care not to get water on the pinheads until they are about the size of a pea.

Step 4

Pick the mushrooms as they appear and continue to keep the compost moist to encourage growth. When the first flush of mushrooms has finished, place the tray back in a warmer environment for 9-10 days before moving to a cooler place for the next flush to form. Repeat until you have had 3 or 4 crops of mushrooms and then use the spent compost as a soil conditioner in the garden.
